ECCE2025 - 15th European Congress of Chemical Engineering

A e-CODUCT research results were presented at 15th European Congress of Chemical Engineering, organized by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE) in Lisbon, Portugal. In the session Decarbonization of chemical processes, prof. dr. Miha Grilc (CO NOT) held a lecture on Electrification of methanol synthesis and sulfur recovery from acid gas on pilot scale”.

prof. dr. Miha Grilc (CO NOT) held a lecture on “Electrification of methanol synthesis and sulfur recovery from acid gas on pilot scale” at ECCE 2025, Lisbon, Portugal (10.9.2025)

In poster session dr Grilc team was presenting two the research topics related to e-CODUCT project.  The e-CODUCT project is finding new ways to reduce harmful emissions from refineries and petrochemical plants by turning waste gases like CO₂ and H₂S into useful products. Its innovative process first converts these gases into carbonyl sulfide (COS), then uses renewable electricity in a special reactor to split COS into carbon monoxide and sulfur. The first poster presentation, “From first principles to pilot scale: Kinetic Modelling of Sour Gas-based CO Conversion to Methanol, focused on creating a kinetic model that combines first principles calculations with experimental data to guide the conversion of CO to methanol at pilot scale. Methanol is an important building block for cleaner fuels and chemicals.

The second poster, “Biobased acrylic acid production through Re-heterogeneous catalysis: towards process electrification” presented promising results for greener chemical production. A commercial Re/C catalyst delivered the best performance, achieving a 60.6% yield of methyl acrylate and acrylic acid, while magnetic catalysts also showed promising activity. Future tests in induction-heated reactors will explore how electrification can further enhance the energy efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability of chemical production
